Cake Pedestal
A cake pedestal is an excellent way to present desserts. The
elevated plate holding the cake makes a fine presentation. The pedestal itself is many times finely decorated and
will add a festive and refined touch. For home use, a pedestal and plate is usually reserved for applying the
frosting and decorating, or used for a variety of informal occasions. The applications we are probably most
familiar with would be in restaurants and bakeries. These are the places where they are commonly used to highlight
the selections or a featured dessert. They may also serve a more practical purpose as does a revolving cake stand
which can make serving easier.
A wedding cake pedestal is usually a highly decorative piece
used to highlight the special occasion, and the cake itself. The materials used for making the pedestals may
include acrylic cake stands or those made of other ceramics, glass, metals, like stainless steel, or may be silver,
gold or chrome plated. There are wood pedestals and plastics that may also be used for less formal situations or as
aides in the cake preparation itself.
The pedestal and the plate may well be a single unit or two
separate items. The base, or pedestal, will usually be broad-based for stability and have a post where the setting
for the plate sits. If it’s all one piece, moving the cake may present more of a challenge. The plates themselves
may be rather plain or richly decorated with elaborate etchings and designs. One thing that can be a wise
investment, whether a single unit or not, is to look for a set with a matching cake cover. Finding a matching set
with a cake carrier might even be a better buy if you plan on carrying many cakes to different events. The cover
will help prevent the cake from drying out, protect the decorations and prevent contamination when left
out.
Cake platters can be found in many shapes and sizes. Some may
have several levels for tiered cakes or to display multiple desserts. The pedestals can be any height and come in
any number of shapes. For instance, a very nice glass pedestal is the “6" Pink Milk Glass Pedestal Cake Plate
Salver” [Server], by Mosser Glass. This is an American, handmade, single-piece glass pedestal in a very attractive
color. The diameter is six inches and stands 5 1/2 inches high. Rosanna Products offers a tea stoneware set
in white with red polka dots. It includes the "Red Dots Pedestal Cake Stand" which is 9 inches in diameter. Another
example is Wilton's "3-Tier Cakes N More Party Stand." It includes clear plastic trays and is made in a chrome
finish. A square cake pedestal is available from Tag, Ltd. The "Whiteware Porcelain Ceramic Square Pedestal Cake
Plate" has an 11-square-inch plate and stands 6 1/4" tall. For a more formal occasion, the 'Miller Rogaska Soho
Collection' by Reed & Barton is a 13 inch flat platter that sits on a 4 inch high pedestal. It is made of 'full
lead crystal' and is sure to add elegance to any occasion.
A cake pedestal can be a simple, inexpensive tool to use in the
kitchen to assist with the frosting and decorating and for everyday use. Or as is now evident, one can be found for
frequent, varied use or purchased as an heirloom, or gift, for the special occasions in your
life.
