Square Cake Pedestal  

When it comes to cake presentation, a square cake pedestal can stand out from the more common round cake pedestal. Though there are not as many choices available, the materials used to create them will include disposable, one-use stands, to those that will become prized family possessions, if not family heirlooms. You will find square pedestals in plastic, glass, crystal, and metals to meet the needs for almost all gatherings. The stands may be shorter like plateaus, or rise several inches off of the table, to highlight your creation. 

To start, if you enjoy baking for your family, or even a small business, there is a square revolving cake stand that may be of interest to you. The "Ateco Rectangular Revolving Cake Decorating Stand" stands 5" high and has a large, 12" x 12" plate to make it able to handle almost any project. With the smooth turning ball bearings, this will make applying the frostings and decorations smoothly a much easier task. It is made of heavy aluminum with a cast iron base, so this will provide years of service for aiding preparations and serving family and guests. If the approximately $100 price tag seems a little more than you might wish to invest, Parrish's Cake Decorating Supply has a similar model that measures 16" in length x 12" wide that sells for $50 - $75 and is made of the same materials.

There are three square "Whiteware Cake Stands" distributed under the Martha Stewart Collection. These are imported pieces and made of white porcelain. They are available in 8", 10" or 12" platters.  There is a slightly raised edge to act as a crumb-catcher and the beautiful, simple elegance will be useful many times over the years. The price range for these pedestals will vary according to where they are purchased, so take some time and shop around. As of this writing, each was on sale at Martha's website. If you were to purchase the set, they would make an excellent presentation if stacked. Any of these would make for a nice wedding cake pedestal.

Another choice for a large, square plate would be Tag Ltd's "Whiteware Porcelain Ceramic Square Pedestal Cake Plate" which stands 6 1/4" with an 11" plate or a larger 14" square with a 7 1/2" pedestal. These will fit in most settings and will surely come to be used in your home all year long. Crate and Barrel has an exclusive hand-finished, Italian "Chelsea Footed Cake Pedestal" made of earthenware. It stands 4" high and is 13 square inches. It retails for $50 and offers the advantage that it can be used in the oven - up to 400 degrees. 

If you would like to have a very distinctive piece, here are three suggestions. The first is Godinger Crystal Company's "Freedom Footed Cake Plate" which sits 5 1/2" high with a 7 or 10 inch square plate. This is made of 25% lead crystal and has some stunning cuttings and edges. The second would be the very distinctive offering from GG Collection. Their "Versailles Cake Pedestal" is 14.5" square and stands over 19" high with the included dome. Since it is handmade of ceramic and aluminum, each is an unusual piece with an 'Old World' flavor. The third is offered by Target and is made of bamboo. It is 13" square and has a four" pedestal and retails for $30. 

These are just a few suggestions for a square cake pedestal. Know that there are some very nice choices in metals as well, with prices ranging into several hundred dollars for some stands that are very close to being pieces of art. Square cakes can certainly be a practical choice for any occasion. The proper display can make for a special presentation and lasting memories.
